Mark of a Woman

Amelia Maxwell

18 - 22 March 2022

The J/M Gallery is delighted to present 'Mark of a Woman', curated by independent art advisory Amelia Maxwell. Presenting works from some of the most exciting emerging female artists, the exhibition runs from the 18th – 22nd March. The showcase seeks to shine a much-needed spotlight on women artists, who remain under-represented, underrated and, as such, under-valued in the global art market.

Amelia Maxwell has curated the work of five top contemporary women artists, predominantly British-based, though with some additional international influences, whose portfolios reflect the breadth of talent from their innovative use of unconventional materials and medium, to their perspectives and messages, style, use of colour, imagery and inspiration.

Mark of a Woman not only presents innovative and intriguing pieces from some of the most talented female contemporary artists, but also provides an important platform to discuss equality in art, to showcase their tremendous contribution – both historic and current – to the genre, and why now represents the ideal opportunity to incorporate female artists into new or existing collections.

The gender gap between male and female artists might be starting to close, thanks to improved profile, promotion and visibility, but the contrast is particularly stark when it comes to comparing sale prices. The world’s most expensive painting by a man is Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundo which fetched over $450m USD when it sold at auction in 2017. This is over 10 times more than the equivalent highest sale by a female artist, Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Flower/White Weed No.1, which sold for over $44m USD in 2014. Fortunately, the sands are shifting, and female artists are starting to gain greater recognition and to become more sought after by collectors, but there is still more work to be done.

Come visit the exhibition, starting Friday the 18th of March.
