Nothing and Something

Lizzie Thurman

10 - 15 November 2022

The J/M Gallery is proud to present a compelling range of artworks on show from acclaimed artist Lizzie Thurman, titled ‘Nothing and Something’, from 10 - 15 November on Portobello Road.

Drawing naturally on the figurative, Nothing and Something focuses on Thurman’s new body of work, exploring the experiences carried within us and the elements that inform who we are. Starting from a common form, Thurman’s dynamic configurations have evolved by exploiting the possibilities of colour and pattern in a focused pursuit to communicate a response to stability: human strengths and underlying vulnerabilities. Thurman’s is a challenge of articulation.

After graduating from CSM London with a BA in Textile/Fashion Print, Thurman was funded by the Arts Council to participate in an Anglo-Egyptian arts project. Months of travel culminated in an exhibition at the Egyptian Embassy London, supported by a Channel 4 documentary. Commissions followed including Paul Smith, Browns, Fortnum’s, Liberty and Macy’s. Thurman traded under her own label, before entering the world of publishing where she took on the role of Decoration Editor at Homes & Gardens. After her time at IPC magazines, she packed sketch books and a camera to spend a year traveling through Madagascar, East Africa and Indonesia – this life changing experience continues to be a resourceful, creative influence. On Thurman’s return to London, she continued working as a creative director, freelancing for numerous ‘Glossies” and global brands. In parallel with her work as an art director/stylist and textile designer, she set up a painting studio in Shropshire.

Over the last two years, working from a fresh perspective, Thurman has interpreted experiences to create characters of meaning. Using a descriptive mix of medium and resist techniques, she has produced a series of fascinating, ambiguous forms which make sensitive and diverse connections.

Expect eclectic works wrapped in vibrancy, bringing well-needed stimulation through the darkening Autumn - Winter transition period. Many cultural and global influences have found their way into Thurman’s work, so relations can be made across a wide range of lived experiences. The show runs from the 10 - 15 November @ the J/M Gallery, 230 Portobello Road.
