Rachel Deacon & Lara Bowen

Ingo Fincke Gallery

15 October - 18 October 2026

Ingo Fincke Gallery presents Rachel Deacon and Lara Bowen at J/M Gallery this autumn.

Rachel Deacon’s abstract paintings are driven by an intuitive and highly responsive process in which form, movement, and spatial relationships become the primary means of expression. Working without predetermined outcomes, she allows each painting to evolve through a continual dialogue between instinct and control, embracing uncertainty as an essential part of the creative act. Underlying this approach is a deep understanding of composition and spatial relationships, informed by decades of experience as a figurative painter. The resulting works possess a dynamic visual rhythm, where positive and negative space interact to create movement, depth, and harmony across the canvas. Viewed from multiple orientations throughout their making, the paintings resist a fixed point of view, encouraging sustained engagement as forms and relationships gradually reveal themselves. Deacon’s abstract paintings are open, fluid, and continually revealing new possibilities, the works occupy a space between intention and chance, offering an experience that is both immediate and contemplative.

In Lara Bowen's 'Palimpsests', painting begins with a letter, handwritten on the surface. To someone she knows, someone she's lost, a younger version of herself, or simply thoughts that need a place to exist. The letters are never intended to be fully read. They become the first layer of the painting before gradually disappearing beneath colour and gesture. What remains are fragments: traces of handwriting, half-hidden sentences and marks that hint at conversations rather than revealing them. Some paintings take the form of still lifes, others become abstract impressions of a place, a journey, a memory or a particular state of mind. Whatever their subject, each painting grows from the same quiet act of writing. The title 'Palimpsests' refers to a surface that carries traces of what came before. Like memory, nothing is ever completely erased. Every experience leaves something behind. These paintings are about what we carry with us: people, places, emotions and experiences that continue to shape us long after the moment has passed. The writing may disappear beneath the paint, but its presence remains, becoming part of the finished work in much the same way that memory becomes part of us.
