The Door Is Not The Destination

Lucky Mamu Unu

25 February - 03 March 2026

'The Door Is Not The Destination' is a debut solo exhibition by Lucky Mamu Unu, a Nigerian-born, London-based photographic artist. This exhibition foregrounds becoming over arrival, asking not what an image finally is, but presenting its ever-evolving potential to acquire new meaning.

Shaped by the language of theatre, Unu engineers his past as a framework for image-making. Throughout this ritual, of shifting between past and present, the archive functions as both anchor and stage - sometimes directly intervened upon, sometimes quietly informing new works. Looking back becomes a deliberate process, allowing photography to operate as a site where memory is performed and transcribed into material form, positioning the image as an illustration of time in formation, rather than a fixed truth. Through intensive editing, Unu ruptures his photographs with contrast, sharpness, and colour, rendering figures faceless and details obscured. These absences function theatrically, carefully constructing enigmatic gestures, silhouettes, and cultural narratives that operate beyond the visible.

The exhibition brings together three key bodies of work: 'Art of Connection' explores human relationships, and the ways individuals connect with one another and the self, forming a complex social fabric; 'Who Gets to Be Me?' examines the tension between artistic pursuit and economic survival, reflecting on societal and financial pressures and how that shapes identity conflicts; 'Blues', presented here for the first time, introduces a nostalgic sensibility, extending Unu’s ongoing exploration of the archive.

Unu’s work has been exhibited across the UK, Europe, and Nigeria, including RE:VISION - East Wing Biennial at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London; NAE Open at New Art Exchange, Nottingham; Portrait of Britain 2023, London; and Pulsation Urbaine in Paris. Unu was shortlisted for Portrait of Britain Vol. 6 by the British Journal of Photography and selected for Guest Room: Poetics of Darkness curated by Dr. Tina Campt and Keisha Scarville. His work has been published by 1854 Media and featured in international exhibitions and platforms.

An opening will take place on Wednesday 25th from 6 pm - 9 pm. Please RSVP through the link below!
