The Joy Chronicles
Georgie Weedon
02 July - 07 July 2026

Introducing 'The Joy Chronicles', a solo presentation by artist Georgie Weedon at J/M Gallery.
The exhibition considers joy not as a transient emotion, but as a practice of noticing that can be cultivated, recorded and shared. At its core, the Institute asks: What happens when we learn to notice joy more deliberately?
The work is influenced by David Hockney’s emphasis on the power of colour and perception to hold attention and renew ways of seeing. In this spirit, the exhibition explores painting as a way of noticing the aliveness of the world, finding wonder in fleeting moments that might otherwise pass unseen.
Weedon’s paintings are defined by bold brushwork and a vivid use of colour, creating works that are energetic, uplifting and emotionally resonant. The work sits within a lineage of artists who treat painting as an embodied and often ritualised act, where gesture, rhythm and colour hold the residue of movement, attention and lived experience. Weedon responds: “I paint intuitively, often in response to music, and I often dance, sing and move while I work, so the work is made through movement, rhythm and energy rather than plan. That energy carries into the finished painting. I am often told that my paintings are joyful, and I am interested in why this is the case, and how the energy of making is held within the surface of the work. I also just love colour!”
Weedon’s exhibition develops a visual and sensory archive of fleeting moments of joy. Through painting, text and observational fragments, the work attends to subtle emotional experiences, including light shifting across a room, shared laughter, unexpected stillness and the expansion of attention within ordinary time. Rather than presenting joy as spectacle, the exhibition frames it as evidence, fragile, transient and deeply human. The work is defined by Weedon’s use of colour and bold brushwork. Colour acts as both material and method, shaping attention and experience. The work sits within a lineage of artists who treat painting as an embodied, often ritualised act, where gesture, rhythm and colour hold the residue of movement, attention and lived experience.
